Using a Sword Safely

If you like to watch martial arts movies, spy movies or any other type of action film, you can certainly understand the appeal of learning to fight with a sword. The majestic swooping of the blade is enough to make anyone want to partake in sword fighting. However, in the spirit of the old adage "safety first," before you start to swoop your sword around to lop off heads and limbs, you should learn how to go about using a sword safely.
Choosing your sword
There are many different types of swords you can choose from. For a beginner, it may be better to choose a medium weight sword that is shorter. The medium weight is not too heavy to lift, but also is not as erratic as a lighter-weight sword. The shorter blade forces you to focus more on your target and prevents you from having unnecessarily broad strokes. Other types of swords include two handed swords and practice swords. Practice swords generally are made of wood. They are generally lighter than actual swords and allow you to practice your strokes without having a functional blade.
How to use a sword safely
Once you have chosen your sword, it is important to know how to use it safely. You should avoid using a sword around other people until you have enough experience to know how to maneuver your sword effectively. You should also always wear gear to protect your face and legs as these are the areas that you are most likely to injure while using a sword.
No matter what type of sword you choose, sword fighting is a fun activity that is great exercise.
